Solid Waste/Recycling

The City maintains a transfer station located on Transfer Station off the eastern side of South Street near Harrison Street. The hours of operation are Wednesdays and Saturdays 7:30 am until noon and 1:00 pm until 3:30 pm.

Transfer Station Rules and Guidelines

It is the goal of the City of Calais to reduce the cost of municipal solid waste for the taxpayer to the lowest practical level. To that end we have adopted a pay by the bag program to cover tipping fees at the landfill. In addition we encourage recycling and are trying to expand cost effective ways to remove more trash from the waste stream that requires expensive landfilling. These guidelines and rules were established to reach this goal.

The City of Calais Transfer Station is for Calais residents, property owners and businesses only. A permit is required. Permit stickers for your vehicles are available at the City Building, 11 Church Street, upon showing vehicle registration. There is no fee. We accept household wastes in City blue bags, unpainted wood and brush, leaf and yard waste for compost, demolition debris, and other recyclables, such as metals, cans, glass, cardboard, newspaper and some plastics.

Disposal of demolition debris is by far the most expensive item in the Transfer Station budget. Each ton of this waste must be buried in a landfill.

Commercial haulers and contractors are prohibited from using the facility.
