Calais has historically been a city of commerce and is recognized as the primary shopping center of eastern Washington County and Charlotte County, New Brunswick. Currently retail, service, and construction businesses are the primary components of the Calais economy.

Calais is home to 3,123 residents and services a regional population of 15,000. Calais has worked to bolster its economy by revitalization of its downtown and development of an industrial park complete with sewer, water, three-phase power and transportation facilities. Calais is designated as a HUB zone for economic development.Calais has a remarkable endowment of historic buildings and natural beauty. The quality of life is further enhanced by the availability of an array of community facilities including a regional hospital, Washington County Community College (formerly WCTC), numerous parks and recreational facilities.

Public Notice

The Calais City Council will hold a public hearing on Thursday, June 29, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers of the City Building to consider the following:

Land Use Code Ordinance Repeal and Replacement

This ordinance repeals the existing Land Use Code Ordinance and adopts an updated ordinance. The new ordinance is substantially the same as the previous ordinance with the following exceptions: Many definitions are reorganized to be chapter specific; the Floodplain Management Ordinance updates and replaces to the State Model Ordinance standards that reference the countywide Flood Insurance Study and adopting new Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps; Clinics would be allowed in the Residential-1- Professional Office zone with site plan approval from the Planning Board: the ordinance eliminates the requirement for a 25’ green strip for non-residential development along Route One.   

Copies of the proposed Ordinance are available online in the Government/Ordinance section at calaismaine.org and in the Code Enforcement Office at the City Building. All citizens are invited to attend and show just cause, if any, why this Ordinance should not be passed.
